As parents, we often have those moments where we facepalm our foreheads and want to look at our kids and say, “Hello? Welcome to planet Earth!” We shake our head and wonder, “What rock have you been living under?” Then we either drop it or continue with a conversation regarding the “missed obvious”.
As a parent with a child on the spectrum, I have to admit that it differs from the moments we have with our child that is not on the spectrum. The facepalms are done mentally. The scrunch of the forehead. The wrinkle of the nose. The closed so tight the eyes look pinched. The bite your bottom lip holding in a chuckle. Yeah THOSE moments. In addition to that, the welcome to planet earth is a little less like a “doh” moment and more like a “Horray! Progress!” moment. The discover of the obvious.
